A study in 442 university students showed a reduction in insomnia reports after consuming just 10 almonds daily for two weeks. Researchers noted a “reducing impact on severe, mild, weak and normal sleep categories.” In another study where almonds extracts were given to rats, the rats responded by sleeping much longer and with more time spent in the first sleep phase, i.e. non-REM sleep.
Almonds contain both magnesium and melatonin. Magnesium is involved in many bodily processes, including the regulation of sleep and reducing anxiety. And while the amount of melatonin in raw almonds is relatively low compared to other natural sources, such as cherries, it may still contribute to the overall sleep-promoting effects of almonds.
